Bug Hunt

 

 

Locations on the farm:

Wooded Areas, River banks fields near reservoir – stopping at each area to search for bugs.

Pre-visit contact with school:

Knowledge of habitats and basic animal classifications would be useful.

 

Learning outcomes:

Different bugs need different conditions to live in and are adapted to them. We need to maintain a good balance in nature to suit all of them

 

Content of the visit:

Finding different habitats and the bugs that live in them. Visit a range of habitats across the farm and discuss the needs of the bugs that live in them.

 

Organisation factors:

1-1½ hours on the bug hunt around the farm, followed by ½ hours of discussion.

Recommended group size to be 15 or less. Wet weather clothing may be needed and footwear appropriate for walking on a farm.

Health and safety talk to be given to group on arrival at site.

Bug hunting equipment will be provided.

 

Resources:

Bug finding kits, Bug identification kits, flip chart back in education centre.

 

Evaluation methods:

Teachers / helpers to provide feedback on supplied forms.
